South Korean Film Industry's Best to Compete at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards

The South Korean film industry's most prestigious event, the Baeksang Arts Awards, will take place on Friday, with a lineup of award nominees that includes some of the industry's most respected filmmakers and actors. The event will feature awards for films, TV dramas, and plays that were released in the past year.

Park Bo-geom, Suzy, and Shin Dong-yup will be leading the ceremony, just as they did last year. The Baeksang Awards is one of South Korea's three most prestigious award ceremonies, alongside the Blue Dragon Film Awards and Daejong International Film Awards.

Ahn Tae-jin's "The Night Owl," a period thriller drama film, received the most nominations of any film this year, with eight nods in total, including best film and best lead actor. July Jung's "Next Sohee," a social drama, was also nominated for best film, best lead actress, and best new actress, with lead actors Kim Si-eun and Bae Doo-na expected to attend the ceremony.

Also nominated for the best film award is "Hansan: Rising Dragon," which was released in July 2022 and drew 7 million moviegoers. Tang Wei from Park Chan-wook's Cannes-winning "Decision to Leave" will attend the ceremony as she is nominated for best lead actress.

Jeon Do-yeon and Yeom Jeong-ah will also be present at the award ceremony for their recent works in "Kill Boksoon" and "Life is Beautiful," respectively. Actor and singer IU, who made her screen debut last year with "Broker," has been nominated for the best new actress award, while "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" actor Kang Ki-young will attend for his best supporting actor nomination in the blockbuster film "The Point Men."

The event will take place at Incheon Paradise City Hotel and will be broadcast live on local cable channels JTBC, JTBC2, and JTBC4, as well as digitally on TikTok. Fans of Korean cinema worldwide are eagerly anticipating the event to see which films and actors will be honored.
