The Craft Prize 2023, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF), has been awarded to metalsmith Sang-hyeob William Lee.
Lee, known for his precision in silversmithing, is acclaimed for crafting a diverse array of intricately hand-hammered vessels. His designs draw inspiration from traditional Korean ceramics and aesthetic philosophy.

One of his standout creations is an argent moon jar, towering at over 50 centimeters in height, meticulously crafted by hammering a single 11-kilogram sheet of silver. His works, including the moon jar, are characterized by a unique texture that conveys the fluidity of flowing streams.
In 2003, Lee was honored with the prestigious Young Designer Silversmith Award from the Goldsmith's Company, a long-standing organization in the United Kingdom that has been a staunch supporter of craftspeople and the industry since 1327.
Lee's exceptional craftsmanship has earned him a place in the collections of esteemed institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Goldsmiths' Company in the UK, as well as the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the United States, among others.

Having pursued his education in silversmithing and metalworking at the University of the Arts London's Camberwell College of Arts, Lee has achieved international recognition for his dedication to the craft.
The Craft Prize, established in 2018, is an annual accolade that aims to acknowledge craft artists and organizations for their contributions to the advancement and promotion of Korea's craft arts, both domestically and on the global stage.
The award ceremony and a related exhibition are scheduled to take place during the upcoming Craft Trend Fair at COEX in southern Seoul in mid-December. The prize includes a handmade trophy and a cash award of 15 million won ($11,100).
