A unique metal sculpture in the shape of a tree has been installed at the tramway terminus in Hérouville Saint-Clair, located in the Calvados department near Caen, France. The symbolic artwork was officially inaugurated on July 11, 2025, and serves as both an artistic installation and an educational tool in the fight against domestic violence.
The metal tree sculpture was created by 15 students from the Metal Academy, a specialized institution based in Colombelles that trains young people in welding professions. The students dedicated an entire year to working on this meaningful project, developing both their technical skills and awareness about an important social issue.
Strategically positioned in a high-traffic area between the tramway terminus and the Hérouville Saint-Clair police station, the sculpture serves multiple purposes beyond its artistic value. The tree functions as both a symbolic representation and an informational resource for the community.
The artwork carries deep symbolic meaning related to the fight against domestic violence. Throughout the creation process, the students were educated and sensitized about the serious issue of domestic abuse. The sculpture's design reflects this educational journey through its symbolic elements. At the base of the tree, among its roots, visitors can find words that evoke the suffering and consequences associated with domestic violence. In contrast, the tree's branches feature flowers accompanied by words that represent hope and reconstruction, symbolizing the possibility of healing and recovery.
This meaningful project was initiated by Sylvie Dumont Prieux, who serves as the delegated councilor for domestic and intrafamily violence in Hérouville Saint-Clair. Throughout the year-long creation process, she met with the students multiple times, providing guidance and education about the serious nature of domestic violence and the importance of raising awareness about this critical social issue.
The sculpture incorporates modern technology to enhance its educational impact. A QR code has been integrated into the base of the tree, which allows passersby to quickly access digital resources. When scanned with a smartphone, the QR code directs users to a dedicated page about domestic violence on the official website of the city of Hérouville Saint-Clair, providing immediate access to resources, support information, and assistance for those who may need help.
This innovative approach demonstrates how art can be combined with education and community outreach to address serious social issues.
