The film reached the 10 million ticket sales milestone 33 days after its release, as reported by distributor Plus M Entertainment, citing data from the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for ticket sales.

"12.12: The Day" holds the distinction of being the first non-franchise film to garner 10 million viewers since the release of "Parasite" in 2019. It also stands as the first non-franchise film to achieve this milestone since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Notably, other films reaching 10 million viewers during this period have been sequels or follow-ups to previous works, such as "Avatar: The Way of Water" in 2022.

The film, directed by Kim Sung-su, delves into a pivotal nine-hour period on December 12, 1979, when a military coup d'état loomed over Seoul. Actors Hwang Jung-min and Jung Woo-sung portray fictionalized versions of former President Chun Doo Hwan and a military leader opposing him, respectively. Kim Sung-su, known for films like "Beat" (1997), "Musa" (2001), and "Asura: The City of Madness" (2016), helmed the project.
