A stunning Mumbai apartment located on the 61st floor has been transformed into what designers call "61 Shades of Joy" – a vibrant, multi-generational home that celebrates individuality while maintaining remarkable cohesion. The project, designed by The SS Story architecture firm led by Snehal Mehta and Surbhi Patil, showcases how contemporary luxury living can be deeply personal and playfully sophisticated.
The apartment at Oberoi Sky City was designed for a warm, multi-generational family seeking a brighter, airier home where three generations could live together while retaining their unique personalities. Taking inspiration from the panoramic views of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the designers embraced openness as their central theme, dissolving walls and merging rooms to create seamless flow throughout the space.
Visitors are immediately greeted by a striking black safety door punctuated with 61 vibrant veneer cut-outs – a playful reference to both the floor number and the home's joyful personality. The entrance sets the tone with soft curves, maroon artwork, and a sculptural gold console that introduces the tactile elegance defining the interior spaces.
The heart of the home features an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area that unfolds as one continuous expanse. Fluted panels create depth behind the sofa, while a rippling marble ledge and graphic black-and-white veneer doors add texture and bold contrast. A multicolored veneer dining island serves as the visual focal point, its tones echoing the entrance door design. The space is anchored by maroon and blue center tables from NH48 Furniture, a blown smoked-glass chandelier from V Lights, and a matte-gold sculptural prayer room that stands as both a serene centerpiece and modern expression of devotion.
Each bedroom tells its own distinct story of personality and design. The daughter's room creates a whimsical world of discovery with scalloped shelves, pearl-studded wardrobes, and flamingo and dragonfly motifs that lend soft, dreamlike charm. A heart-shaped chest and mirrored panel dotted with glowing globes add theatrical flair, while the window ledge offers a perfect daydream nook.
The parents' bedroom takes a more grounded approach with earthy beige tones, rust-flecked panels, and restrained gold accents. Subtle geometric detailing replaces predictable motifs, creating a warm, tactile backdrop that balances sophistication with intimacy. The space demonstrates how luxury can be expressed through understated elegance rather than ostentatious display.
The young couple's studio bedroom makes the boldest statement with its black, white, and red palette that channels their love for music and travel. A sculptural red wave headboard anchors the space, complemented by a ceiling papered with musical notes. Handmade artwork featuring shells collected during their journeys sits above the bed, while a marine-inspired totem lamp and bright red dice leg beneath the TV unit add personality and wit.
Even the bathrooms carry the home's expressive character throughout. The master bathroom continues the studio's bold energy with a black-and-red palette featuring durable fixtures from Aquant, while the second bathroom creates a vibrant, quirky space in cheerful yellow with playful details that feel both joyful and sophisticated. Both spaces are meticulously crafted, balancing durability with tactile charm.
The project team, including Ritu Upadhyay and Astha Khandelwal, ensured that every corner, surface, and fixture tells a story while harmonizing function with intimate details. Clean lines and timeless materials form the backdrop, while exuberant pops of color and texture breathe energy into every room. Premium materials throughout include veneer from Venzo Wood, rugs from Jaipur Rugs, soft furnishings from Cotton and Satins, and flooring from La Opulence and Classic Marble Company.
"Every project begins with the people," explain the designers. "For us, this one was about translating the family's story into spaces filled with what we call bursts of joy." This philosophy unfolds throughout the home, where luxury isn't measured in square feet or floors, but in stories, spirit, and soul. The result is not just a high-rise apartment, but what the designers call "an emotional elevation" – an ode to living beautifully, boldly, and together high above the bustling city of Mumbai.
