Gallery Hyundai to Present Seung-taek Lee at Art Basel 2025

BASEL — June 17, 2025 — Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel in Basel 2025 with a solo presentation of pioneering Korean artist Seung-taek Lee at Booth G13, on view from June 17 to 22 at Messe Basel.

Recognized as a trailblazer in Korea’s avant-garde movement, Seung-taek Lee is celebrated for his concept of “non-sculpture”, a radical approach that challenges conventional definitions of sculpture and art. Emerging in tandem with major Western art movements such as Arte Povera, Conceptual Art, and Land Art, Lee’s practice demonstrates a striking synchronicity with global trends despite his geographical distance from Western art centers.

Born in the 1930s, Lee occupies a unique position among Korean artists of his generation. His work has consistently engaged with materiality, site, and form in unconventional ways, earning him a lasting legacy as one of Korea’s most experimental voices.

Lee’s contributions to contemporary art were most recently highlighted in the international touring exhibition Only the Young: Experimental Art in Korea, 1960s–1970s. The exhibition, which was jointly organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the Guggenheim Museum in New York, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, ran from 2023 through 2024 to critical acclaim.

As one of the central figures in the exhibition, Lee’s works from the 1960s and 1970s sparked new international dialogue around Korea’s postwar avant-garde and were praised for their innovation, material exploration, and philosophical depth.

With his presentation at Art Basel 2025, Gallery Hyundai continues its commitment to advancing the global recognition of Seung-taek Lee’s legacy and Korea’s contribution to postwar contemporary art.
