The Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), under acting president Yoo Hyun Seok, published a groundbreaking research report titled "Strategies to Promote Eco-Friendly Content Production and Practical Guidebook Development" on December 20. The initiative aims to support the domestic content industry's transition to environmentally sustainable production practices.

This report is part of KOCCA’s ongoing project, ECO ACTION (Eco-friendly and Sustainable Content Production), which was launched last year to promote eco-consciousness in content production across Korea. The latest research builds on the foundation set by the "Development of Guidelines for Expanding ESG Management in the Content Industry," published in 2023.

The study examines key eco-production guidelines from leading countries, including Germany, France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Switzerland, while analyzing domestic and international examples of sustainable practices. By tailoring the findings to Korea’s unique content production ecosystem, KOCCA has revised its existing guidelines to include new actionable measures and performance evaluation metrics, thereby enhancing their practical applicability.

One of the highlights of the project is the development of a carbon calculator tailored to Korea's content industry. This tool enables production companies to measure carbon emissions across all production stages—pre-production, production, and post-production—by inputting data on various emission sources. The calculator applies domestic emission coefficients to provide accurate carbon footprint calculations, helping companies set achievable carbon reduction goals.

The carbon calculator was developed through extensive research, including on-site analyses of emission sources at domestic production facilities and input from over 500 industry stakeholders. This collaborative effort ensures the tool’s accuracy and relevance to the industry’s needs.

KOCCA’s new guidebook and carbon calculator are designed to empower the Korean content industry to comply with increasingly stringent global carbon regulations and address climate challenges proactively. By integrating these tools, KOCCA seeks to foster a production environment conducive to creating sustainable and competitive content on a global scale.

As part of its ongoing ECO ACTION initiative, KOCCA plans to continually refine the guidebook and carbon calculator in response to evolving international standards. The agency also intends to launch promotional campaigns and educational programs to ensure the widespread adoption of green practices within the domestic content sector.

The full research report, "Strategies to Promote Eco-Friendly Content Production and Practical Guidebook Development," is now available on the KOCCA website.
