The 14th Busan International Comedy Festival will open at 7 p.m. on Aug. 21 at the BEXCO Auditorium. The festival will run across Busan through Aug. 30.
This year’s program is organized around the theme “Return of the Legends.” It includes performances revisiting the history of Korean comedy alongside productions by Korean and international artists.
Comedian Yang Sang-guk will host the blue carpet event before the opening show. Executive Chairman Kim Jun-ho and Busan Vice Mayor for Administrative Affairs Kim Kyung-deok will deliver the opening declaration. Ji Suk-jin will host the main ceremony.
The opening program will also include a tribute to the late comedian Jeon Yoo-sung. The festival will review his work in Korean comedy before presenting the inaugural Jeon Yoo-sung Award to a figure who has contributed to the development of the genre. Comedian Lee Hong-ryeol will serve as the presenter.
The Croquiky Brothers will open the performance with a combination of drawing, circus and comedy. The program also includes the audience-participation “Malja Show” and segments from KBS2’s “Gag Concert.” Band QWER will give a special performance.
Other Korean productions scheduled during the festival include “A Jeon Yoo-sung Show Without Jeon Yoo-sung,” “Galgalyi Gag Concert: Return of the Legends,” “Ongals,” “Seoul Comedy All Stars” and “B-Class Hearing.”
International programming includes the French mime comedy production “Mime de Lyon.” Fringe-format performances will also be held at locations across Busan.
The festival will conclude on Aug. 30 with “I Am a Gae-gasu,” a closing production combining music and comedy.
