The city of Boryeong is set to host the 2024 Boryeong Seaweed Festival at the Daecheon Beach Mud Plaza on October 26-27, aiming to promote its renowned roasted seaweed (gim) industry. As one of the region’s most important local products, this festival highlights both the cultural and economic significance of gim in the region.
On the festival’s first day, a special event at 3:30 p.m. will invite participants to join in the challenge of making a 90-meter-long gimbap, a popular Korean dish featuring rice and seaweed. Additionally, a variety of hands-on experiences will be available throughout the event, including gim harvesting, drying, and roasting, giving attendees the chance to learn more about the traditional methods of producing this beloved food.
Alongside the interactive activities, the festival will also feature a promotional pavilion for Boryeong’s gim and anchovy products, allowing visitors to learn about and purchase the region’s high-quality seafood at discounted prices. The festival seeks to promote the benefits of consuming seaweed, known for its nutritional value and health benefits, particularly when produced in the clean waters of the West Sea.
In addition to food-related experiences, a variety of cultural performances are scheduled to take place. These include the National Singing Classroom Festival, a musical gala show, a traditional Korean percussion (nanta) performance, and hip-hop concerts. Local art and cultural groups will also be performing, providing entertainment and highlighting the vibrant community spirit of the Boryeong region.
Mayor Kim Dong-il expressed his enthusiasm for the festival, stating, “Boryeong roasted seaweed is a healthy food made from high-quality raw materials produced in the clean waters of the West Sea. We hope visitors will create precious memories while enjoying the romantic autumn atmosphere at Daecheon Beach.”
The Boryeong Seaweed Festival not only celebrates one of the region’s most iconic products but also serves as a means to support and revitalize the local economy. By offering a wide range of activities and performances, the festival attracts both locals and tourists, bringing increased attention to Boryeong’s seafood industry.
As seaweed (gim) remains a staple in Korean cuisine and continues to gain popularity internationally, this festival offers a perfect opportunity to deepen appreciation for this nutritious food. It also provides a platform to showcase the long-standing tradition of seaweed farming in Boryeong, contributing to its reputation as a center for high-quality seaweed production.
The combination of educational experiences, local performances, and food sampling ensures that the 2024 Boryeong Seaweed Festival will be an event that appeals to a wide audience. With the stunning backdrop of Daecheon Beach, the festival promises an engaging and memorable experience for all who attend.
