French indie game studio Strategy Game Studio (SGS) has officially listed its upcoming turn-based strategy title, SGS Imjin War, on Steam as of February 10. The game aims to bring to life the historical conflict of the Imjin War (1592–1598) through deep tactical gameplay.

SGS Imjin War covers both the initial Imjin War (1592–1593) and the later Jeongyu War (1597–1598), allowing players to command either the Joseon forces or the invading Japanese army in a turn-based war simulation. The grand campaign spans from May 1592 to April 1594, consisting of up to 105 turns, while additional smaller-scale scenarios focus on key battles such as the Battle of Ichiryu (1592) and the Battle of Haengju (1593). A scenario covering the later stages of the war up to 1598 will also be included.

The game begins with the Japanese forces’ initial landing at Dongnae Fortress (modern-day Busan) and unfolds across seven key battlegrounds that shaped the conflict. Victory conditions differ by faction: the Japanese must conquer Joseon and advance into Manchuria, ultimately securing Liaoning Province, while the Joseon forces must drive out the invaders completely. In terms of military balance, the Japanese army boasts numerical superiority on land but suffers from naval weaknesses, whereas the Joseon side relies on delaying tactics, leveraging its superior navy and militia resistance until reinforcements from the Ming Dynasty arrive.

SGS has emphasized large-scale battles featuring thousands of soldiers, as well as historical warships such as the famed turtle ships. Additionally, the game introduces a variety of card-based mechanics, allowing players to navigate factors like weather, resource management, loyalty shifts, diplomacy, sieges, and direct combat engagements. Players will encounter dynamic battle variables, including ranged combat, boarding actions, cavalry skirmishes, militia uprisings, and artillery bombardments.

SGS, founded by Europa Universalis developer Philippe Thibaut, has built a reputation for turn-based historical war games. Since launching the SGS Winter War in 2020, which depicted the Soviet-Finnish War (1939–1940), the studio has continued to develop titles based on global conflicts. In October 2022, the studio released SGS Korean War, focusing on the Korean War (1950–1953), which received highly positive reviews.

Players interested in SGS Imjin War and other SGS titles can find more details on the game’s Steam page and the official SGS website.
