S2A Gallery Opening Exhibition, The Little Giant of Asian Contemporary Art, Yayoi Kusama

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama was selected as the artist for the opening exhibition of the recently opened S2A Gallery. The title of this exhibition is 'Yayoi Kusama: Journey to the unbounded universe'.

This exhibition is expected to be recorded as her largest exhibition held in Korea. Her works on display this time, from the early 1980s to the present, are various works that transcended the limits and genres of reality, with a total of about 40 pieces including paintings and prints, sculptures.

The leader of S2A Gallery is Chairman Kim Woong-ki of Global Sae-A Group. His first art collection, Yayoi Kusama's 'Green Pumpkin' and 'June's Garden' are also on display at this exhibition. Kim said, “I hope that Gallery S2A will become a space for artists and art lovers. We hope that this space will serve as a stepping stone for the development of Korean art.”

Yayoa Kusama was born in 1929, She is 93 years old this year. She grew up in her poor family environment and suffered from her mental problems and obsessive compulsions during childhood, often making her suicidal.

However, she has sublimated the pain of her childhood into her art. She sublimated the ‘afterimage of a red floral tablecloth’ she saw in difficult times into her trademark ‘polk dot and net’.

actually she said “A puzzling illness is the reason I paint. For me, Art is the best doctor.” Her story is that her art activities led her to her healing.

Yayoi Kusama carried out various artistic activities in New York from 1957 to 1972, crossing genres such as sculpture, fashion, and performance.

However, when she returned to her hometown of Japan in 1977, she herself was admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where she set up a studio near the hospital to combine work and treatment.

Eventually, she pushed her own limits, and in 1990 she held a retrospective of her in New York, where she was revived in a splendid way, earning her world fame.

S2A said, "We will continue to prepare exhibitions by domestic and foreign artists that shed light on contemporary art. We will also do our best to discover and actively introduce young and promising artists to establish S2A as a culture and art platform equipped with expertise and popularity."


S2A is planning an exhibition of Korean masters of Dansaekhwa(monochrome), including Park Seo-bo, Lee Kun-yong, Lee U-fan, Cho Yong-ik, and Ha Jong-hyun as the next plan. In addition, S2A plans to release Kim Whanki's 'Universe', the most expensive work in Korea, which has recently become a hot topic after it was confirmed that it was owned by Chairman Kim, to the public during this year.

This exhibition runs until September 14. Admission is free and closed on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.
