David Lewis, a prominent New York art dealer who recently closed his eponymous gallery, has joined Hauser & Wirth as a senior director. His gallery, which opened in 2013, showcased artists such as Trey Abdella, Barbara Bloom, and Mary Beth Edelson, among others. However, it remains unclear if any of the artists from his previous roster will be represented at Hauser & Wirth.

Lewis earned a PhD from the City University of New York, focusing on the Dada artist Francis Picabia. His final exhibition, "Everyone Loves Picabia," reflected this research. The art dealer expressed his honor in joining Hauser & Wirth, highlighting his long-standing admiration for the gallery's dynamic vision. Marc Payot, president of Hauser & Wirth, praised Lewis for sharing the gallery's values and commitment to original art historical scholarship.

Lewis is the third New York dealer to transition from a gallery focused on young artists to a blue-chip space in the past year, following Simone Subal and Jasmin Tsou. The closure of their galleries, along with others like Helena Anrather and Denny Gallery, marks a significant trend in the New York art scene.
