In a significant legal development, Nam Tae-hyun, a former member of the renowned K-pop boy band WINNER, and reality show star Seo Min-jae have been indicted without detention by prosecutors for alleged violations of the Narcotics Control Act. The Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office made this announcement on Thursday, shedding light on their alleged involvement in the illicit use of methamphetamine in August 2022. Additionally, Nam faces suspicions of using the drug independently in December.
Both individuals have reportedly admitted to acquiring and using methamphetamine, acknowledging their involvement in the drug's consumption, which they purchased through a social media platform. Notably, Nam has taken measures to address his drug-related issues by entering a rehabilitation center and raising awareness about the perils of drug use on a television program.
The decision to indict them without detention comes after a series of events that began with Seo Min-jae's Instagram posts in August, where she made claims about Nam's use of methamphetamine. She even mentioned the possible presence of a syringe related to the drug in her room or within a company cabinet. Subsequently, Seo removed the posts, citing impairment in judgment due to psychiatric medications. However, concerned internet users reported the matter to the police, prompting an investigation. In May, the police sought arrest warrants for both Nam and Seo, but the court rejected the request.
Nam Tae-hyun, who initially rose to fame as a member of WINNER in 2014, left the group two years later. On the other hand, Seo Min-jae gained recognition through her appearance on the reality show "Heart Signal 3" in 2020.
As this legal saga unfolds, it underscores the challenges faced by individuals in the entertainment industry and raises questions about the broader issue of drug use in the spotlight.
