This match marked South Korea's first international game on home soil this year and their first match since losing to Jordan 2-0 in the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup in February. Following this defeat, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann was dismissed, and Hwang Sun-hong, head coach of the under-23 men's national team, was appointed as caretaker boss for the subsequent matches against Thailand.

The national team faced controversy after it was revealed that two key players, Lee Kang-in and captain Son Heung-min, were involved in a scuffle over a game of table tennis. Son suffered a dislocated finger during the altercation. Lee apologized to Son personally and to the team during a meeting before the match against Thailand.

During the match, Son scored the opening goal for South Korea with a left-footed shot assisted by Lee Jae-sung. However, Mueanta later equalized for Thailand with a left-footed effort from close range.

South Korea's participation in the World Cup remains significant, as they have qualified for every tournament since 1986.
