The film The Firefighters, directed by Kwak Kyung Taek, has debuted at the top of the box office, overtaking Victory (directed by Shin Yeon Shick) and securing its place as the audience favorite on its opening day. According to the Korea Film Council’s integrated ticket sales network, the film attracted 81,674 viewers on December 4, claiming the number one spot among all currently screening films.

Despite facing stiff competition with fewer screens—983 compared to Moana 2 (1,171 screens) and Victory (995 screens)—The Firefighters performed strongly, signaling the potential for sustained success. The movie has received favorable audience reviews, as reflected in its impressive 93% CGV Golden Egg score, a key indicator of audience satisfaction. Much of its acclaim stems from its compelling storytelling, inspired by real-life events.

The film is based on the tragic 2001 Hongje-dong fire incident, chronicling the heroic efforts of firefighters who risked their lives to extinguish the blaze and save survivors. Its emotional depth and tribute to real-life heroes have resonated with audiences, positioning it as a must-watch film of the season.

In second place is Moana 2, which, while previously dominating the charts, saw its momentum slow due to the release of The Firefighters. It drew 55,981 viewers on the same day, bringing its cumulative audience count to 1,545,611. Despite its slight drop in daily ranking, the animated sequel remains a strong contender for family audiences.

Victory, which also premiered on December 4, ranked third with 46,362 tickets sold nationwide. Although the film features an intriguing storyline and a solid ensemble cast, it couldn’t outpace The Firefighters in its opening battle for box office supremacy.

Rounding out the top five were Wicked (directed by Jon M. Chu) and The Hidden Face (directed by Kim Dae Woo), which secured fourth and fifth places respectively. Wicked attracted 24,845 viewers, while The Hidden Face brought in 18,460.

As The Firefighters continues to gain momentum, industry experts predict sustained strong performance in the coming weeks, bolstered by its unique premise and emotional appeal. With its ability to draw audiences of all demographics, the film underscores the enduring impact of stories grounded in real-life heroism.
