MinhwaOne, an art group dedicated to the reinterpretation of traditional Korean folk painting (minhwa), is holding its 10th exhibition at Gallery Grimson in Seongbuk-dong. The exhibition, titled Creating New Values from Tradition, will showcase diverse works of art that explore new interpretations of traditional Minhwa(민화) aesthetics. Breaking away from the convention of creating art around a single theme, MinhwaOne presents a dynamic collection where each day of the week highlights a different theme, allowing members to express their individual artistic voices.

The exhibition runs from Monday to Friday, with each day exploring a unique theme through the lens of minhwa. Monday focuses on A New Perspective on Chaekgado (traditional Korean bookshelf paintings), where six artists have each reimagined the various panels of Chaekgado, infusing them with personal narratives. This approach brings modern sensibilities to traditional minhwa structures, offering viewers a fresh way to appreciate its artistic depth.

On Tuesday, the exhibition shifts to Imaginary Animals, showcasing mythical creatures such as dragons, phoenixes, and the sacred deer of the ten symbols of longevity. These works reinterpret mythological themes through the Minhwa format, offering a new perspective on folklore with the use of various artistic techniques that breathe new life into these timeless symbols.

Wednesday’s theme is Blooming Flowers, with a focus on rediscovering the beauty of flowers and butterflies, a common subject in Joseon dynasty Minhwa. Artists have infused their work with vibrant modern colors and expressions, offering an experience where tradition and contemporary artistry meet.

Thursday’s theme, 100 Books, revolves around the symbolism of books in Korean Chaekgado paintings. Artists have reinterpreted the bookshelf paintings either by recreating traditional works or by adding their own narratives to them. Accompanying these works are sculptures that complement the theme, providing a more comprehensive exploration of minhwa’s storytelling potential.

The 10th exhibition by MinhwaOne offers an engaging experience for visitors, with each piece revealing the artists’ creative processes and intentions. The exhibition emphasizes the joy of both creating and viewing art, offering a multi-faceted look at how traditional minhwa can be reimagined in the modern age.

MinhwaOne continues its mission of bridging the past and present through its unique exploration of minhwa, with future exhibitions aimed at fostering communication between art and the public. This exhibition demonstrates the potential for traditional art to evolve and connect with contemporary audiences.
