The Daejeon Museum of Art has announced that it is recruiting 200 artists to participate in the "Daejeon Art Direct Transaction Free Market," an initiative aimed at expanding exhibition opportunities and strengthening the local art scene. The application period runs until March 9, with the event scheduled to take place on April 26-27 at the museum’s lawn plaza.
Following last year’s success, where 1,576 artworks were sold, generating total sales of 66.16 million KRW, the museum is enhancing the event with an expanded schedule and improved accessibility. Last year’s market attracted 20,000 visitors, demonstrating significant public interest in affordable, high-quality art.
This year, the free market will operate under the slogan "Good Art! Fair Prices!" and will introduce several new changes:
The event will now be held twice a year in spring and autumn, instead of just once. Age and price restrictions for participating artists and artworks have been relaxed. Opening hours will be extended from 10 AM to 7 PM to accommodate more visitors. Additional programs, including an outdoor concert and a live painting contest, will be introduced to enhance audience engagement. Eligible participants include emerging, young, and amateur artists aged 45 and under (born in or after 1980). Artists across all mediums are invited to apply free of charge, making the event an attractive opportunity for those looking to gain exposure and connect with art buyers.
Yoon Ui Hyang, director of the Daejeon Museum of Art, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "This free market provides young artists with a vital platform to showcase their work while allowing the public to experience art in an accessible way. We encourage talented, creative artists to take advantage of this opportunity."
By expanding the event’s scale and incorporating interactive elements, the Daejeon Museum of Art aims to bridge the gap between artists and the public, fostering a more vibrant and inclusive cultural environment.
