A groundbreaking coliving development called Yuanverse Living Paradigms has been completed in Ordos, China, showcasing a bold new approach to contemporary residential architecture. Designed by AOMOMO Studio in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the 3,349-square-meter project represents a significant innovation in modern living spaces, combining cutting-edge design with practical functionality.
The architectural design features striking frustum-shaped metal exterior walls that reflect a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. The original concept proposed light steel structures with fiber cement cladding, utilizing modern materials and construction techniques to echo traditional building methods in a thoughtful architectural approach. However, the design team ultimately recommended adopting more conventional concrete structures for the exterior walls to reduce technical barriers and enhance weather resistance against harsh wind and snow conditions common to the region.
The design philosophy emphasizes creating a simpler, more rustic expression that provides sharp contrast with the modern metal roofing system. Photography by ZY Architectural Photography captures the unique interplay between these contrasting materials and textures. The project team, led by Zhang Haiao and including Yu Yang, Li Di, Xu Hang, Yang Ge, Pan Wenqi, Li Yihang, Tang Ling, Wu Changlong, Zhang Minghui, and Zhu Jingwen, worked collaboratively to realize this innovative vision.
Construction was completed by Inner Mongolia Hongshengda Construction Group Co., Ltd., with the project commissioned by Hangjin Banner Fuquan Trading Co., Ltd. The development also involved cooperation with Inner Mongolia Jiesu Hotel Management Co., Ltd., and construction development support from Zhongcheng Keze Engineering Design Co., Ltd.
One of the project's most notable features is its emphasis on creating additional semi-outdoor spaces within each dwelling unit. These spaces are specifically designed to provide enhanced viewing experiences and create visual highlights for visitors exploring the complex. The integration of these transitional spaces between interior and exterior environments represents a thoughtful approach to modern living that acknowledges the importance of connection to the outdoors.
The completed project stands as a testament to innovative approaches in coliving design, demonstrating how contemporary materials and construction techniques can be successfully integrated with practical considerations for climate and durability. The development sets a new standard for residential architecture in the region and offers insights into the future of communal living spaces.
