Book designer Alissa Dinallo and her partner Nick Ball have successfully transformed an underwhelming 1890s cottage in Petersham into their dream family home after an extensive renovation project. The couple discovered the property after nearly 12 months of desperate house hunting, initially finding the cottage to be in average condition but recognizing its untapped potential due to its deep block size.
The original structure, one of five connected cottages, presented significant challenges with its dark and closed-in layout that featured zero north-facing windows. According to Dinallo, the bathroom and laundry were positioned at the back of the property, completely blocking views of the backyard from inside the house. These major design flaws prompted the couple to consult with Nick's father, Peter Ball, a retired architect, who recommended an almost total knockdown and rebuild approach.
Peter Ball took creative control of the project, deciding to demolish most of the existing structure while preserving only the period facade and front room to maintain the home's historical character. The renovation priorities focused on maximizing space and natural light throughout the residence. The bottom level underwent significant extension, incorporating a new bathroom, staircase, internal courtyard, and an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area that created a seamless flow between spaces.
The upper level received equally dramatic improvements with the addition of a new bathroom and main bedroom connected by an innovative glass walkway. For the interior design, Dinallo collaborated with Nick's sister, Jessica Ball of Elemental Interiors, to unlock additional valuable space and select appropriate finishes. This family collaboration resulted in an internal laundry, an outstanding kitchen design, and a dedicated bath area for the children.
Despite the benefits of working with family members, Dinallo acknowledged the challenges, noting that while working with family proved to be a gift, there were definitely heated discussions throughout the process. The design team selected materials including concrete, timber, marble, and brass to give the home an inherent tactility that contributes to its overall relaxed, imperfect, and fun personality.
The renovation timeline coincided with multiple challenging circumstances, including COVID-19 lockdowns and the arrival of a new baby. Additional complications arose from months of heavy rainfall and supply chain shortages, creating an incredibly difficult period for the family. However, Dinallo expressed no regrets about the experience, stating that despite the hardships, she genuinely loved the process of renovating and decorating their house.
Reflecting on the completed project, Dinallo emphasized how the home's imperfections serve as reminders of their learning journey and personal growth throughout the renovation process. She admitted to sometimes wondering how they managed to survive that challenging period but expressed gratitude for persevering through the difficulties.
The family's time in their newly renovated home has been temporarily interrupted due to Nick's recent job offer in Singapore. Nick, Alissa, their 4-year-old daughter Tilly, and 7-month-old son Jude have relocated for the time being, leaving lucky tenants to enjoy the gorgeous transformed property. The house will remain ready and waiting for the family's eventual return, prepared to serve as the setting for their next life chapter.
