Two large-scale graffiti artworks have been completed on the Münster Street bridge abutments in Hamm's Lippeaue recreation area, created by the Münster-based graffiti company Lackaffen. The colorful murals highlight both the natural habitat and recreational opportunities available in this newly developed park space along the Lippe River.

The artistic intervention addresses a common urban problem where illegal graffiti had previously marred both the north and south walls of the bridge overpass leading into the newly created floodplain park area. Rather than simply removing the unwanted markings, city officials chose a creative solution by commissioning professional street artists to transform the concrete surfaces into educational and visually appealing artwork.

The northern bridge abutment was the first to receive the artistic treatment in 2022, featuring various wildlife species that the nature conservation project aims to promote and protect. The detailed mural showcases beavers, kingfishers, and white storks – all native species that benefit from the habitat restoration efforts in the Lippeaue area. These animals serve as symbols of the successful environmental rehabilitation taking place along the riverbank.

This September, the Lackaffen crew completed work on the southern bridge support, focusing on human recreational activities available throughout the floodplain park. The vibrant artwork depicts people engaged in various outdoor pursuits including jogging, cycling, disc golf, and bouldering (rock climbing). These images serve to inform visitors about the diverse recreational opportunities they can enjoy while exploring the natural area.

According to city officials, the two decorated bridge supports symbolically represent the dual objectives of the Lippeaue project. On one hand, the initiative focuses on creating and preserving natural habitats for wildlife, while simultaneously developing spaces that can be enjoyed by human visitors. The goal is to remind park users of these two important project aims through the visual storytelling of the murals.

The artistic project carried a price tag of approximately 10,000 euros net, according to city records. This investment represents part of the broader multi-million euro Lippeaue recreation area development, which was jointly created by the Lippe Association and the city of Hamm. The expansive park now occupies space that was originally designated for the former Lippe Lake project.

Visitors can access the Lippeaue recreation area from both Münster Street and Fähr Street, making it easily reachable for residents and tourists alike. The combination of professional street art, nature conservation, and recreational facilities demonstrates how urban planning can successfully integrate environmental protection with community amenities and public art initiatives.
