The 49th edition of the Ludwigsburg Architecture Quartet will take place on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Musikhalle Ludwigsburg, featuring discussions on three significant renovation projects in the Stuttgart region. The event, organized by the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects, continues its mission to promote understanding of contemporary architecture quality and familiarize the interested public with construction projects in the Stuttgart area.
Since 1998, the Ludwigsburg Architecture Quartet has served as a biannual platform for exchanging ideas about current construction projects and urban development initiatives from the region. The upcoming event will focus specifically on renovation and transformation projects, highlighting the growing importance of adaptive reuse in contemporary architecture.
The discussion will center on three notable renovation projects that demonstrate different approaches to architectural transformation. The first project is the Kunstgebäude at Schlossplatz in Stuttgart, originally constructed in the 1910s based on designs by Theodor Fischer and recently comprehensively renovated by blocher partners from Stuttgart. This historic building renovation showcases how contemporary architectural interventions can breathe new life into early 20th-century structures while preserving their historical significance.
The second featured project is the Hölderlinhaus in Nürtingen, which has been transformed by Aldinger Architekten from Stuttgart into a multifunctional cultural hub. Following the renovation, the building now houses not only the adult education center (Volkshochschule), a music and youth art school, and the cultural office, but also features a dedicated Hölderlin exhibition on the ground floor. This project exemplifies how historic buildings can be adapted to serve multiple contemporary cultural and educational functions.
The third project to be discussed is the conversion of a former fashion house into the House of Tourism in Stuttgart, executed by asp Architekten from Stuttgart. This transformation represents the adaptive reuse of commercial architecture for tourism-related purposes, demonstrating the versatility of renovation approaches in urban contexts.
The panel for this edition will bring together diverse perspectives from architecture journalism, academia, and cultural policy. Amber Sayah, an architecture journalist and co-founder of the Ludwigsburg Architecture Quartet, will contribute her expertise in architectural criticism and communication. Zvonko Turkali, an architect practicing in Frankfurt and professor at the University of Hannover, will provide academic and professional insights into renovation practices.
Sara Dahme will represent the cultural and political dimension of architectural projects in her role as an art mediator and cultural policy spokesperson for the SPD faction in Stuttgart. The quartet will be completed by Hans-Jürgen Breuning, who will serve as the moderator for the evening's discussions, guiding the conversation between the panelists and the audience.
The event will take place at 7:30 PM at the Musikhalle Ludwigsburg, located at Bahnhofstraße 19, 71638 Ludwigsburg. In keeping with the series' commitment to public accessibility, no registration is required and admission is free. This accessibility reflects the organizers' dedication to making architectural discourse available to all interested members of the community, regardless of their professional background or economic circumstances.
The Architecture Quartet series has established itself as an important forum for architectural dialogue in the region, consistently drawing audiences interested in understanding how contemporary building practices shape their urban environment. The focus on renovation projects for this edition reflects current trends in sustainable architecture and the growing recognition of the value of existing building stock in addressing contemporary spatial needs.
