In an astonishing feat, the state-run minting agency of South Korea announced on Tuesday that the commemorative medal marking the 10th anniversary of K-pop sensation BTS' debut has achieved its highest sales ever. The Korea Minting and Security Printing & ID Card Operating Corp., known as Komsco, revealed that the initial edition of BTS' 10th anniversary medal surpassed 10,000 copies sold last year, amounting to an impressive 6 billion won ($4.49 million) in revenue. This remarkable achievement sets a new sales record for any commemorative medal ever produced by Komsco.
Collaboratively launched by Komsco and Big Hit Music, the band's label, the commemorative medal was introduced last year to celebrate BTS' monumental milestone of a decade since their debut in June. The success of the first edition was nothing short of extraordinary, with the 1-ounce (28-gram) gold medal, limited to 1,000 units worldwide, selling out within a mere two hours of its release on the Weverse Shop. The Weverse Shop is the official K-pop merchandise store operated by Hybe, the parent company of Big Hit Music.

Komsco attributes the overwhelming response to the BTS medal not only to its exceptional sales figures but also to the advanced stamping technology utilized in its creation. The band's official logo was intricately engraved in a fine pattern using a technique typically employed by banks for coin production. This marked the first time such a method was applied to a commemorative medal. Additionally, Komsco highlighted that the BTS medal features a mint mark, a distinguishing symbol indicating the place of production, typically found on significant commemorative coins.
Looking ahead, the state-run agency has plans to release the second edition of BTS' 10th anniversary medal later this year. The forthcoming medal will boast a distinct design, incorporating the portraits of the seven members of BTS with the utilization of cutting-edge technology, as revealed by the medal manufacturer. Bahn Jahng-shick, the head of Komsco, expressed enthusiasm about the new release, stating that it would add value to the celebration of BTS' 10th anniversary by combining Komsco's special design expertise with state-of-the-art technology. Bahn further emphasized the agency's commitment to producing a medal that encapsulates the immense value befitting BTS' esteemed reputation.
The extraordinary success of the BTS 10th anniversary medal serves as a testament to the unwavering global support for the South Korean superstars. BTS' passionate fanbase, known as the ARMY, continues to demonstrate their dedication by eagerly embracing these commemorative items. As the band's influence expands, crossing boundaries and captivating audiences worldwide, the partnership between Komsco and Big Hit Music stands as a testament to the powerful convergence of music, art, and collectibles. With the imminent release of the second edition of the medal, fans can anticipate yet another remarkable chapter in the legacy of BTS, further solidifying their status as global icons.
